Git: GitHub, GitLab and your own servers

Branches, commits and pull requests find their task by key, and a merged PR can move the task along the workflow. Works with GitHub, GitLab and their self-hosted editions.

Why

Developers live in Git, managers live in the tracker. So that nobody has to move statuses by hand, Volent reads repository events and shows the state of development right in the task.

How it works

  1. The task key is the link

Volent looks for the key in the branch name, in the title and description of a PR or MR, and in the commit message. “feature_VOLE-1” and “vole-1-login” are recognised, and “VOLE-10” is never mistaken for “VOLE-1”.

  2. The workspace owner connects it

GitHub by installing the app, GitLab with the address and a token of a service account with the Maintainer role. The token is verified before it is saved.

  3. The project chooses repositories

Linking a repository to a project turns on event delivery. While something is missing, the screen says exactly what it is waiting for instead of showing buttons that do nothing.

  4. Five development states

Branch created, draft PR, PR open, approved, merged. For each state the project can set a task status; by default this is off.

  5. The “Code” section in a task

Branches, commits, PRs with approvals and reviewers, and the latest CI build. You can always copy a branch name or the “git checkout -b” command, even without a connection; Cyrillic is transliterated.

  6. Links back from GitLab

When you link a GitLab repository, “VOLE-123” in MRs and comments becomes a link to the task. If another tracker is already configured there, we leave it alone.

  7. Your own servers

Public addresses only, over HTTPS and without redirects. GitLab Self-Managed from version 19.1 with signed webhooks; GitHub Enterprise Server through your own GitHub App created from a manifest.

Good to know

  • The “Integrations” page shows the state of each connection: not set up, plan required, needs attention, connected.
  • After moving from Pro to Free, GitHub Enterprise Server data and sync stay; only new actions are closed.

Availability

FreeGitHub, GitLab.com and GitLab Self-Managed.
ProGitHub Enterprise Server.

Annual Pro billing is 20% cheaper. Questions about plans: [email protected].

Smaller improvements

  • An “Integrations” catalogue with a tile for each product.
  • Git is available on every plan.
  • GitLab works with the token of your service account.
